Common engineered hardwood questions, answered.

What's the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?

Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top layer (3–6mm thick) over a multi-ply stable core. Solid hardwood is full-thickness real wood. Engineered is more dimensionally stable across humidity changes, can install over concrete or radiant heat, and costs less. Solid hardwood can be refinished more times. For most Ohio homes we recommend engineered.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Yes — most premium engineered hardwood with a 3mm+ wear layer can be sanded and refinished once or twice. The lower-end 1mm wear layer products can't be refinished. We'll tell you the wear layer thickness on every line we quote.

Will engineered hardwood gap or cup in winter?

Less than solid hardwood — that's the main reason we recommend it for Ohio homes with seasonal humidity swings. Some seasonal expansion and contraction is normal across all real wood, but engineered's stable core minimizes the visible gapping you'd see with solid plank in a dry-furnace winter.

How long does engineered hardwood installation take?

Floating-floor (click-lock) install of engineered hardwood typically takes 2–4 days for a whole-house project. Glue-down install over concrete adds a day for adhesive cure. Stair installs add separate scope.
